SEO advice is everywhere. Most of it is outdated, generic, or written by people who've never ranked a page in their life.
I build websites for a living. I see what Google actually rewards — not what blog posts say it rewards. These 7 tactics come from real client projects across the US, UK, and Europe, not theory.
1. Core Web Vitals Are Now Table Stakes
Google's page experience signals (LCP, FID, CLS) aren't optional anymore. Sites that fail Core Web Vitals simply won't rank against competitors that pass them.
What to check: Run your site through PageSpeed Insights. If LCP is over 2.5 seconds or CLS is over 0.1, you're losing rankings. Fix: optimize images, remove render-blocking JavaScript, and use a CDN.
2. Topic Clusters Beat Keywords
Targeting individual keywords is dead. Google now ranks topical authority — sites that cover an entire subject comprehensively. Instead of one page targeting "web development," create a cluster: a pillar page on web development + separate posts on custom development, e-commerce development, CMS development, etc. Then link them together.
3. Internal Links Still Win
Most sites waste their internal linking potential. Every page should link to at least 3-5 other relevant pages on your site. This passes authority (link juice) between pages and helps Google understand your site structure.
Quick win: Add contextual links from your blog posts to your service pages and related articles. Each link is a vote of confidence.
4. Write for Humans, Structure for Robots
Your content should be easy to read and easy for Google to parse. Use proper heading hierarchy (H1 → H2 → H3), short paragraphs, bullet points, and descriptive link text. Avoid "click here" — use descriptive anchors like "our web development process."
5. Schema Markup Gives You an Edge
Structured data helps Google understand your content and display rich results (star ratings, FAQs, breadcrumbs) in search. Sites with schema markup rank 1-2 positions higher on average. Add FAQ schema to your service pages, Article schema to blog posts, and LocalBusiness schema if you have a physical location.
6. Page Speed Is a Ranking Factor (But It's Also a Conversion Factor)
Google confirmed page speed as a mobile ranking factor years ago. But the bigger impact is on conversions: a 1-second delay drops conversions by 20%. Fast sites rank better and convert better. Compress images, use modern formats (WebP), enable browser caching, and minimize JavaScript.
7. Backlinks From Real Sites Still Matter Most
Nothing has changed here. Quality backlinks from authoritative sites in your industry are still the #1 ranking signal. But don't buy links or spam directories. Create content that people naturally want to link to — original research, case studies with real numbers, and comprehensive guides.
